‘Heroes and Villains’
28 September – 23 October 2011
Limerick Printmakers Studio and Gallery are delighted to announce ‘Heroes and Villains’, a group show involving 8 artists, 10 days, 32’ x 4’ of wood, some beer, ink, a vague theme and a garden roller, all on the new premises of Limerick Printmakers Studio and Gallery, 5a Sarsfield Street, Limerick. This project formally reopens our studio space in our new premises. Following the excitement expressed by the public on culture night, at seeing the process of print in action, this project is another unique opportunity to engage with a group of artists and watch their prints develop through various stages, from the initial drawing stage to the cutting, and finally the inking and printing of the woodcut.
The artists arrive on Wednesday 28th September and start working on initial idea development and drawing. Over the course of the following 10 days these ideas and drawings will be transformed into woodcuts which is one of the oldest forms of printmaking, and then printed at the big street print on Sunday 9 October at 2pm. All are welcome to this event. This will be the culmination of 10 days work and the prints will be placed side by side with the woodcuts on exhibition in Limerick Printmakers Studio and Gallery until 23 October. Woodcut is a relief form of printmaking, the image is made by carving an image into the surface of the wood. Removing areas that are to be white, the block is then inked and printed onto paper. As these will be large scale prints and too big for normal studio printing, the wood block will then be taken to the street outside where it will be inked and printed onto paper.
The artists taking part in this project are Claire Byrne, Gary Dempsey, Pamela Dunne, Richie Hanafin, Owen Kelleher, Des McMahon, Derek O’ Sullivan and Dave Whelan. The uniqueness of this project lies in that the artists will do all of this in the public eye in Limerick Printmakers Gallery which will be open to the public for the duration of project. This project is designed to break down the barriers between the studio, the gallery, and the public by taking the process out onto the streets for everyone to engage with. This is sure to be an exciting project and all are welcome to see the artists at work whether to ask questions, observe, engage or to just enjoy the relaxed and easygoing atmosphere.

Anselm Kiefer Documentary

A new documentary is due out in October about Anselm Kiefer entitled "Over our cities grass will grow". I have been a big fan of Kiefer's work ever since my first years in college in books. Later seeing them in reality while in London, the pictures really didn't do the work justice.
Here is a trailer for the feature-

Going to add a few other links in relation to Kiefer too that I have been meaning to post

Limerick Printmakers Open Submission Show 2011

Was at the opening to the LP Open Submission show 2011 last night. Big turn out as it was a double bash, it also was the relaunch of Limerick Printmakers in they're temporary home for the next year or so. good for them to be back in action after the unforseen interruptions of the past while.
The show looked well in the new space and also had a piece selected.
Here is my contribution....

Also managed to get a pic with the little man observing in what daddy does.....

Video-JR Inside out Project

Came across this video this morning. Quite a monumental project. This is the first episode so can't wait to see the rest.

Distance 344 Exhibition

Had a brief visit to Occupy space last night for the opening of Distance 344. Well worth a visit to check it out. Great to see some fimilar facees and some great art. Got a chance to see the previous show here too, have a scroll through the site to see.
Typical me no pics to put up which is a shame as both shows were good.

Day of Days

And so day of days is upon us. Tomorrow moring we, the Irish people (well, only those in Ireland) must provide clarity of thought and select one of these numbnuts to piont us in a positive direction.
My biggest concern lies with those who were forced  to emmigrate. Cocern for their future, our future and how big a part they're plight plays in the future of the Republic.
Its funny I think how history has a way of creeping up and bitting you in the ass, and ignorance of this is key.
This is no place for my political views, or then again maybe it is, but regardless the sons and daughters of Eire will be holding they're breath in anticipation for what awaits them in the coming days.
God speed.....

New Year, new start

Hi there,
Just a quick post to say Happy New Year to everyone! Been quite busy with things not art related for the last while, moved house/country, Christmas/New Year and my boy just turned one. So things have been a bit hectic to say the least.
New Year, new start and all that, the dust is starting to settle and getting time to focus and develop the research that i've been doing for the last few months. Added to this is that I almost have my new studio set up to go, just have to wait on some bits. All in all should be back in business soon and should be posting some pictures of new work thats being started.
